1. What you’ll learn in this post (Table of content)
- A personal story of how we went from idea to building for others
- The 4 core stages of the startup lifecycle
- What Product-Market Fit really means (and how to know if you’ve hit it)
- Why most startups fail (and how to avoid it)
- The role of no-code vs traditional code in each stage
- A simple checklist of what to do based on where you are now
2. My story: From marketplace idea to building for others
Before we were building apps for other founders, we were just like you - two people with an idea.
We wanted to create a platform where parents could swap second-hand stuff their kids had outgrown. The idea felt strong. Everyone we knew had closets full of baby stuff they didn’t need anymore.
2.1 What worked
We didn’t rush to build. We first created a survey and sent it to every parent we could reach - friends, family, local communities.
- 250 responses. - 67% said they’d use it. That gave us confidence. But more importantly, it gave us direction.
When it came to build the app, we focused on functionality, design and data.
As we had to learn to build all functions, we sat and created exhaustive feature list. And then we started to learn and to build one by one.
We also knew that in digital products, first impressions matter.
- Good UI builds trust.
- Good UX keeps people around.
From day one, we treated design as not just a layer, but a growth engine.
And finally, we set up analytics tools right away:
- Google analytics
- Heatmaps
- Scroll depth
- Click maps
That helped us tweak landing pages and UX early - based on real behavior, not guesses.
2.2 What didn’t work
We built the MVP. We launched. People loved the design. The feedback was great. We even got to 1,000+ users.
But then… we stalled. We didn’t know how to scale growth. We weren’t marketers. We didn’t have a paid ads strategy, or partnerships, or a strong content engine.
That’s when we made a key decision: Instead of pushing an idea we couldn’t grow - we started helping other founders build their apps. Founders who had ideas, but know how to do marketing. And needed someone who understood product, design, UX, and lean validation. That’s what led to building our agency.
And that’s why this post exists - to help early-stage founders skip the mistakes we made, and double down on the moves that work.
3. The modern Startup Lifecycle (and how to move through it)
Every startup follows a similar path - from raw idea to scaling up. But what separates the ones that make it? Clarity in each stage. And the right strategy to move through it fast, lean, and smart. Here’s the 5-stage lifecycle we use with founders - and how you can move through it too.
3.1 Ideation → Idea validation
Validate the concept before you build. Build proof, not features. This is where most startups fail - they skip straight to building. But smart founders stop to ask:
- Is this idea actually something people want?
- Will they take action?
- Test your idea with a landing/coming-soon page
- Create a waitlist, capture emails
- Share a clear value prop and CTA
- Promote it to small niche audiences (no need for big budgets yet)
- Track response, clicks, and real interest
3.2 MVP → Initial traction of the built app
Turn proof into a working product. Start lean, stay fast. You’ve validated the idea - now it’s time to build a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) and get it into real users’ hands.
At this stage, you’re not scaling - you’re learning:
- What are users actually doing?
- What features do they use?
- Where’s the drop-off?
- Core features for simple user flow
- Fast build (think: 4-6 weeks, not 6 months)
- Built-in analytics to track usage
- Shipping fast, updating faster
3.3 Product-Market Fit (PMF) → Iteration until it clicks
Make people love your product. Not just use it- love it.This is where magic happens. But it doesn’t happen instantly. You don’t build once and arrive at PMF. You iterate until it feels inevitable.
At this stage:- Users start returning
- You get organic growth and referrals
- Your churn decreases
- You feel less “push,” more “pull”
- Fast iteration cycles
- UX updates based on feedback
- Possibly repositioning or refining the core flow
3.4 Scale → Infrastructure growth
You're growing. But you’re not sure how far your stack can go.You’ve got traction. Users are coming in. The system is working - but you’re starting to hit some performance ceilings. This stage is about technical growth, not just users.
Signs you’re here:- 10K+ users
- Performance dips
- You’re starting to “patch” Bubble with workarounds
- You need external databases or more scalable infrastructure
- Backend separation
- External database (Xano, Supabase)
- Structured workflows for scaling
3.5 Full-scale growth and maturity
You know what works. Time to go all in.This is where most apps should consider moving from no-code to custom code.
Why? Because you already know:
- Your product works
- Revenue is coming in
- Your audience is clear
- You’ve validated flows, pricing, onboarding
- You have a live, working example
At this point, you’re not starting over. You’re just copying what works into a more scalable stack.
What to do here:- Start migration planning (step-by-step)
- Partner with DEV companies (we can recommend trusted partners)
- Maintain Bubble version until full code is live
4. The role of no-code vs traditional code at each stage
With rise of no-code tools and their improvement, now we understand the exact role of no-code vs traditional code, and the fact that they are not cancelling but enhancing each other.
Today with high quality design talent, you can build no-code apps that are indistinguishable from traditional cod, except for performance at high scale.
We believe that there is no need to spend 30k EUR to build custom-code MVP, when you can do it for 5k EUR using no-code. You can then use remaining budget for marketing and staff, or either test new ideas.
When you have proven product that users are paying and growth is becoming too high to handle - that is the time to start thinking about building custom app from the scratch.
Plus you will know exact feature list to build and how it should look - as you iterated already.
How we approach product development in our agency:
- less than 10k users: we use Bubble with internal database
- 10k-100k users: we transfer to external database (Xano, Supabase)
- 100k+ users: we transfer you to custom-code
Our rule? Start with no-code, prove demand, then scale or rebuild when needed.
You’ll save time, budget, and sanity.

5. What most founders get wrong (and what we’ve learned the hard way)
We’ve built, validated, pivoted, and helped others do the same. Here are the patterns we see over and over again - and the mistakes that slow startups down:
❌ Building before validating Don’t fall in love with the product before falling in love with the problem.❌ Skipping the landing page or waitlist test It’s not just about ideas. It’s about action. No one signing up? Time to pivot or rethink.❌ Confusing MVP with "everything" Your MVP should do one job well. Not all the jobs. That’s how you move fast and learn faster.❌ Trying to scale too early If you haven’t hit Product-Market Fit, scaling = waste. More users won’t fix bad retention.❌ Using the wrong tools for the wrong stage Don’t hire a dev team to build something you haven’t proven yet. Don’t fight Bubble when it’s time to scale.6. Where are you now? (and what to do next)
Here’s a quick diagnostic. Match your current phase to your next step.
Just an idea 👉 Create landing page to test idea Validated idea 👉 Build your MVP to test product Launched app 👉 Iterate quickly to reach PMF Gaining users 👉 Upgrade your infrastructure to external database Scaling big 👉 Migrate to full custom-code7. Final thoughts
You’re not late. You’re not behind. You’re just at the stage you’re in. Learn fast. Validate often. Build what matters. Use latest technology. That’s the game.
